E-Commerce Web Sites

What is E-Commerce?
E-commerce (electronic commerce or EC) is the buying and selling of goods and services on the Internet. The amount of trade conducted electronically has grown extraordinarily since the spread of the Internet. E-commerce that is conducted between businesses is referred to as Business-to-business or B2B.

E-Commerce allows visitors to access your web site, and go through a virtual catalog of your products / services online. When a visitor wants to buy something he/she likes, they "add" it to their virtual shopping basket. Items in the shopping basket can be added or deleted, and when they are ready to checkout they head to the virtual checkout counter, which has the complete total, and will ask them for their name, address etc. and method of payment (usually via credit card). Once they have entered all this information (which is being transmitted securely) they then just wait for delivery. Your business will be sent an email to tell you about the order and you ship the goods to the customer.

Accepting Online Payments
You will need a Paypal Business Account with Website Payments Pro to accept payments within your site, Paypal’s Virtual Terminal is automatically included with this.

Customers pay for orders from your site online with their credit or debit card, they do not need a paypal account to transfer payment to you. When they complete an order they are transferred to a secure section of your site to enter their details. These details are not stored and not available for you to view.

You can apply for this account on the paypal web site, just follow the instructions and please feel free to ask if there is anything you do not understand. The Pro version currently costs £20 a month plus paypal’s commission fees on transactions which are on a sliding scale depending on your online turnover (see their web site for more information, terms and conditions). To set up and verify your account you will need to provide your bank account details and confirm your email address. Virtual Terminal is a facility included with paypal that allows you to take customers order’s over the phone or by mail order.

When you receive an order the payment will automatically be transferred into your paypal account. When an order is completed on your site, you will receive an email containing details about the person who has ordered the products, who they should be delivered to and details of the products ordered. When you receive an email you will need to check that a payment notification email has also been sent to you confirming that the order has been paid for, and will contain the payment details including how much commission paypal have taken.
